Antz: Matte Painting Examples

These are two different still from my matte painting work on the movie 'Antz'. in the expanded part of the image, I've blacked out the parts of the image that were 3D objects, leaving only the background paintings. These paintings were composed of many layers, and we cheated a bit my morphing things like the grass blades back and forth to enhance the feel of realism.

The insectopia image started as photographed trash that we set up on a table in the PDI parking lot. I cut up the pieces into a composition, and the dedicated matte painters worked over it. Then I came in, cleaned it up technically, and did the morphing of the grass blades. In the other image, I had to paint-in half of the acorn-ish tower structure in the background due to a composition change after the original painting was completed.
